Types of Taps & Valves Explained

Tapware is used frequently in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries. Taps and spouts plays an essential, yet quiet role in shaping the feel of a space. Tapware sits at this intersection of water function and design, because tapware must perform conveniently while also being a part of the visual balance of a room. Understanding the types of tapware is an important step in selecting the right tap for your homes, restrooms, hospitals, hotels etc.

Our tapware guide exposes the different types of taps and valves available to help you understand the functionality and then to choose the right aesthetic for the space.

Types of Tapware

There are different taps, and mixers each designed with a specific function, feel, and level of control in mind. Below are ten tapware descriptions or types of to help you understand their differences.

MIXER TAPWARE (MW03)

Mixer taps combine hot and cold water through a single mixer control, allowing easy adjustment of both temperature and flow simultaneously. Their simple operation makes them a popular choice. These mixers can be deck or wall mounted and are separate but work alongside spouts.

MONOBLOC or MIXER TAPWARE (MK03)

Monobloc are deck-mounted taps that mix hot and cold water then expell water through a spout. They are installed through one counter top tap hole. The spout and mixer are integrated. This compact, space-efficient design is neat, making them popular in kitchens.

WALL-MOUNTED TAPWARE (MW03)

Installed into the wall, these taps extend above a basin or bath or in a shower. They offer a clean, floating appearance, and allow surfaces to remain clear of fixtures, These taps priotise simplicity and minimalism.

DECK-MOUNTED TAPWARE (MW12)

Installed onto a basin, bath, or countertop surface, deckmounted taps offer flexible placement options. and they accommodate left or righthand preferences and allow freedom when planning bathroom or kitchen layouts.

THREE-PIECE TAPWARE (MW08JL)

Three-piece taps have separate hot and cold controls positioned either side of a central spout, creating a balanced layout. Their independent operation and symmetrical form give them a appearance suited to classic interiors.

PULL - OUT TAPWARE (MK17)

Pull-out taps have a flexible spray head that can be pulled out from the main body to improve reach and movement. This added functionality aids rinsing and cleaning efficiency, making them ideal for practical kitchens and busy households.

POT FILLER TAPWARE (MK21)

Pot filler taps are wall or deck-mounted taps designed to fill large pots or containers near cooking areas. Their extended reach reduces the need to carry heavy waterfilled cookware, offering convenience and practicality in functional kitchens.

PROGRESSIVE MIXER TAPWARE (MW18)

Progressive mixer taps use a single turning motion to control water flow & temperature. Starting with cold water, the temperature gradually increases as the control knob rotates, offering smooth and precise adjustment where simplicity and precision are valued.

THERMOSTATIC MIXER TAPWARE (MTV011)

Thermostatic mixer taps automatically regulate and maintain a consistent water temperature, even when pressure changes occur. Commonly used in showers, they improve comfort, safety, and convenience while supporting a reliable everyday experience.

CONCEALED PARTS - THE DIFFERENT VALVE & CARTRIDGE FUNCTIONS

Behind every tap is a tap mechanism, concealed part, valve or cartridge that controls how the water flows and blends.
While these components aren’t visible, they determine how a tap operates and how reliably they perform. Here we explain the different concealed parts that define a taps performance.

MIXER CERAMIC CARTRIDGE (MB02)

Cartridge valves are in most single lever mixer taps. It is a cartridge that allows balanced and high pressure water to be mixed easily for smooth and responsive adjustment. They are convenient and user friendly.

WASHER VALVES (MW08)

Washer valves (sometimes called jumper valves) use a rubber washer that compresses against a seat of the tap body to control water flow. This simple mechanical system is associated with unbalanced water pressure so is found in a variety of tap sets. It allows manual adjustment to the hot or cold tap that will affect both temperature and pressure coming out the spout.

CERAMIC DISK VALVES (MW11)

Ceramic disc valves regulate water flow. This gives a two tap hole set up, with the convenience of a mixer. There is only a 45degree turn on these taps, so you need balanced pressure for them to work correctly. The benefit of two taps, is that you can use cold water easily (to save money on energy waste from activating the geyser) as well as the two tap look.

PROGRESSIVE COLD-START MIXER CARTRIDGE (MW18)

This is a single tap mixer that starts off cold, and as you rotate the knob it gets progressively hotter, with the same water pressure. It has a 45 degree turn range and does need balanced and high pressure to function. It is energy saving and convenient because the cartridge is also mixing hot and cold water..

THERMOSTATIC CARTRIDGE (MTV01)

The thermostatic mixer has a sophisticated and specialised cartridge, that is mechanical. (although there can be electronic versions) This cartridge uses a wax system, with a predetermined temperature that can be calibrated to a preference. When the mixer is activated, it allows hot water through until it reaches the set temperature, then stays at that temperature setting while you shower or bath. Benefits include never scalding, if either hot or cold is shut off, this mixer has a safety feature and will shut down. Often used in hotels, hospitals, and old age homes.
